![]() She was portrayed by actress Claire Holt. Along with Cleo and Rikki, Emma discovered her powers after her trip to Mako Island. The possibilities were limitless if the show gave up on the idea of revolving only around three main characters, even after one of them left the cast.Tempest: Hi-ya fan's here's where I found the informationĮmma Gilbert (JAW) - H2O Just Add Water Wiki - WikiaĮmma Gilbert is one of the main characters who became a mermaid in the Australian television series, H 2O: Just Add Water. Hell - Miriam could've become a mermaid, leading to a conflict where she wants to reveal it to the world to get attention, while the girls try to convince her that it is meant to be a secret. By S3, Kim is about the same age Cleo was at when she became a mermaid - we could've had her become a mermaid and have a conflict between a rash impulsive Kim and the more experienced Cleo. Denman (which, btw, are both characters who know about mermaids!) returned to develop Mako into a resort, now that (as far as they are aware) there are no more mermaids. Imagine a season 3 in which Charlotte, which really never showed bad will towards the girls unless they did something to her (except for the last episodes of S2) became a friend of the girls, now that she had no reason to be Cleo's rival. Imagine if maybe he coupled with Bella and, instead of having a random 180 turn in Zane's character development, we had a more nuanced conflict between Ash's helpful and selfless personality and Zane's slightly selfish tendencies. ![]() Imagine if Ash stayed (IDK if he was still available, but something tells me that after Emma left, the producers didn't even try to get Ash) instead of Will. Now, imagine if, instead, season 3 was centred around some of the non-main characters. Imagine if Cleo left the cast and, along with her, we lost Lewis, Cleo's father, Kim. She was the least developed main character, she never really had important complex subplots, her relationship with Ash was more of an afterthought, unlike Cleo/Lewis and Rikki/Zane. So, with a show where the 3 main characters are the centre of the universe, it was bound to happen that, once one of them left, the whole show would go down the drain. By the end of S2, both Ash and Charlotte are people who know about the girls being mermaids! This is never brought up again ever! I talked in other posts about how I don't like how Charlotte is treated in S2 and I believe a lot of this is due to the fact that we are supposed to love the main characters and always be on their side no matter if they are right or wrong. Once their purpose is done, they disappear forever. Ash is Emma's boyfriend, Charlotte is Cleo's rival. Every character in the show in S2 exists solely as an accessory to the 3 main characters. While in S1 there were many characters and subplots, by S2 some characters already disappeared or were heavily side-lined. This "main character are the centre of the world" problem is what H2O suffered from in S2. They are still main characters and they are the force that brought all the other characters together, but the secondary characters are interesting enough that they can act on their own. At the opposite end of the spectrum there is Full Metal Alchemist, where, towards the end, the main characters are completely side-lined. ![]() We never mentioned him until now, and never will again after this episode!". Hell, one episode is like "btw, Luther has a brother. It got to a point where the main characters got girlfriends which were never mentioned again in other episodes. Secondary characters existed, but were mostly episodic and never had their own subplots or development. I re-watched an old Disney show, Zeke&Luther, which had the extreme version of H2O's problem: every episode was about the two main characters. The shows I like and which stay fresh after many seasons are usually in the second category. Obviously, Emma, Rikki and Cleo are the main characters, but re-watching some old 2000s shows, I've got to the conclusion that there are two types of main characters: those who are the centre of the world and those who provide momentum in an already good secondary character cast. ![]() I agree, but I think this boring S3 is what HAD to happen eventually due to the biggest problem of how H2O was written, both in S1 and especially in S2 - the show is extremely centred on the main characters. They argued that S3 could have expanded on the characters that we already had instead of completely side-lining (or straight out eliminating) them. There was a recent post here talking about how disappointing it is that all the characters from S1 and S2 (Wilfred, Charlotte, Cleo's mother, etc.) were abandoned in S3 and replaced with boring characters.
